Very few hospitals in Karachi have a dedicated Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). At most multidisciplinary hospitals, including AKUH, critically ill children are managed within a General Intensive Care Unit under the supervision of a dedicated paediatrician. Of the 67 General ICUs in Karachi, only 14 have the facilities to provide specialised care to children with complex or serious medical conditions.
In the last five years, there has been a rapid increase in the number of critically ill children and young adults needing services. These numbers are expected to rise in the years ahead.
In response to this need, AKUH is setting up a separate Paediatric Intensive Care Unit that provides specialised care to children and helps speed their recovery.
The Unit will enable the University Hospital to:
Create a separate 10-bed PICU to treat an additional 450 critically ill children every year
Create a training site for medical professionals
Total Cost: US$ 2 million (PKR 200 million)
