Led by the Brain and Mind Institute in collaboration with researchers from Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and Makerere University, this study aims to explore the genetic architecture of PTSD in African populations, particularly in Kenya.

This initiative also aims to understand the disproportionate trauma and PTSD burden faced by African communities, improve neuropsychiatric genetic research capacity in Kenya, and examine the links between trauma exposure and other mental disorders like depression and anxiety.

The study seeks to contribute to the first large, well-powered genome-wide study of PTSD in individuals of African ancestry. The project's broader goal is to enhance knowledge of African population genetics and strengthen equitable research partnerships, ultimately advancing mental well-being through research, innovation, and collaboration across various sectors.
