Dr Mushtaq Ahmed
Dr Mushtaq is a graduate of the Dow Medical College, Karachi, where, in addition to being the recipient of a Merit Scholarship in all five years of his MBBS studies, he attained Distinction in the area of Anatomy.
Following graduation he pursued his postgraduate medical education in the United Kingdom where, in 1971, he was named Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
In 1977, Dr Mushtaq returned to his alma mater where he rose to the rank of Associate Professor.
Dr Mushtaq’s association with the Aga Khan University began in 1984, one year after the opening of the University, when he moved from Dow Medical College to take up the challenge of founding the General Surgery section of the newly-established Medical College.
At AKU, Dr Mushtaq provided important leadership to the Medical College where he was Head of General Surgery from 1985 to 1999 and then undertook the Chair of the Department of Surgery from 1996 to 2003. He became a Professor of Surgery in 1989.
More recently, Dr Mushtaq has served the University as the Chief Academic Officer in East Africa from 2008 to 2010.
He continues to serve as a the Associate Dean of Medical Education in East Africa where he has been instrumental in pioneering the Postgraduate Medical Education programme in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
Dr Mushtaq is an accomplished surgeon and clinician who has been instrumental in the professional development, appointment and promotions of faculty. His expertise in educating and training young surgeons, nurses and technicians was recognized by the University in 1996 when he was presented with the Award of Excellence in Teaching.
