Elosy Naitore, Valedictorian
Good morning ladies and gentlemen.
As I stand here today, I am reminded of the words of Nelson Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” And isn’t that our story? Today, we celebrate not just the degrees we’ve earned, but the resilience, the dedication, and the sacrifices that brought us here.
Growing up on the slopes of Mount Kenya, studying at AKU felt like a distant dream. I remember volunteering at the Aga Khan outreach clinic, inspired by the nurses’ epaulette – a symbol of hope and healing. Little did I know that one day, I’d be standing here, representing this incredible class of scholars.
This journey wasn’t easy. There were moments of doubt, late night study marathons, and times when Nairobi’s hustle tested my resolve. But through it all, I learned that resilience is not just about surviving, it’s about thriving. It’s about turning setbacks into comebacks and proving that no challenge is too great when you have a supportive community.
To our deans and faculty, thank you for believing in us, for pushing us to be our best, and for reminding us that excellence is not a destination but it’s a journey. To the AKU support staff, the library, the IT, labs, security, facilities, thank you for creating an environment where we could focus on our dreams.
Today, we also remember His Highness the Aga Khan IV, whose vision and leadership have shaped AKU into a beacon of hope and progress. His legacy of compassion, education, and service to community will continue to inspire us as we step into the world to make a difference.
AKU has not only equipped us with knowledge but also opened doors for transformative experiences. From international conferences to mentorship programmes, we’ve been empowered to lead, innovate, and serve. I’ll not forget my very first flight, made possible by AKU, to the Women Lift Health Conference in Tanzania, a reminder that our potential knows no bounds.
To our family and friends, thank you for the sacrifices and the unwavering support. You’ve been our strength and our motivation. And to my classmates, you’ve been a second family. Together, we’ve proven that “degree ni harambee”. A degree is a collaborative effort.
As we celebrate, let’s remember the story of the bricklayers.
One said, “I am laying bricks.”
Another said, “I am building a wall.”
But the third said, “I am building a cathedral.”
Today, we are not just earning degrees. We are builders of a stronger, more inclusive health care system. Whether we treat patients, conduct research, or shape policies, we are a part of something greater than ourselves.
Class of 2024, this is not the end, it is the beginning. The world is waiting for us. Let’s go out there and make a difference, let go out there and make it better.
Congratulations, the Class of 2024!
