Purpose of the Course
This course takes a problem-based approach to the issues of Pakistan's education system, and seeks to teach students how to think strategically about solving for large-scale issues while considering the challenges/ground realities this involves. In particular it looks at both systems at a country level as well as social institutions that must be considered when working towards any solution in the development sector. This course includes developing a deep understanding of the education space from a policy to a grassroots level; learning how to analyze data for effective decision making; and the importance of theory and social context when developing solutions to systemic problems in the education sector.
Expected Learning Outcomes of the Course
By the end of the course, students will I
- gain an understanding of education theory as it relates to contemporary issues in South Asia
- discuss issues in the area of education in Pakistan (i.e.-primary, secondary, tertiary)
- analyse data as it relates to education policy
- demonstrate critical thinking and reasoning skills
- be able to engage in a reflective process
- be able to formulate written opinions grounded in data, potentially for publication
