The Department of Internal Medicine in Dar es Salaam houses the largest residency at the institution and has a long-standing history of training outstanding physicians. We strive to achieve excellence in patient care, education, and research. Our goal is to provide our residents with the appropriate training that will enable them to offer top-notch, professional, evidence-based care to their patients as physicians of the future. The training programme fosters academic growth, medical expertise and professionalism; alongside development of skills in health promotion, patient safety, communication, and advocacy.
The curriculum is structured to provide knowledge of all the main specialties in internal medicine, from cardiology to palliative care, as well as impart a firm grounding in general internal medicine. We focus on didactic, peer-to-peer, bedside interactive, and tutorial-based teaching to improve sharing of evidence-based knowledge. Professional attitudes and behaviours, technical skills, and clinical bedside acumen are assessed regularly through work-place based assessments and end-of-placement rotations throughout training, in a positive re-iterative way which nurtures residents’ growth towards becoming holistic health practitioners.
Our residents work with faculty who have trained both locally and internationally and are experts in their respective fields. The department faculty are always available to provide residents with guidance throughout their training, and there is a mentorship structure in place for all residents so they always have someone to reach out to.
The members of faculty are highly active in research and we strive to involve residents in research projects, especially with regards to completing their dissertation work. Residents are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts and papers throughout their training under the supervision of the faculty members so as to broaden their horizons on academia and research.
We warmly welcome you to the department and envisage a productive time together as a team over the next few years. Faculty will always remain accountable to you when it comes to preparing you to play a lead role among the next generation of physicians in the ever-changing world.
