Master of Medicine Programme

​Based at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya and Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Aga Khan University offers Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) programmes in nine areas of specialisation.

PGME programmes consist of four years of training and examinations, leading to a Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. They attract candidates from across East Africa who are admitted on merit.

​The curriculum and training is developed to provide relevant and contextual learning for practice in Africa with the goal of nurturing specialists who will impact the development of health systems in their respective countries. Areas of clinical specialisation include:

Each programme has a clear statement of its overall goals and objectives as well as relevant clinical rotations that form the core experience of the learning process, which is largely self-directed. Clinical experience is monitored and guided by expert supervisors/preceptors. Approximately 25 per cent of the resident's time is mandated to structured educational courses.​​​​​​

How many intakes are there in a year?

There is only one intake in a year, and it happens between May and July of each year. 


What programmes do you offer?

Currently the Medical College in East Africa offers 9 residencies in the Nairobi Campus, and 5 in Dar es Salaam. Click on this link to view the list of programmes.


What is the admission criteria? 

The minimum eligibility criteria for medical residency is:

  • Bachelors degree in Medicine (MBChB/MBBS)

  • 1 year post-basic qualification medical internship completion 

  • Registration by KMPDC of home country’s Medical Board or Council

  • Annual Retention Certificate for those in practice for more than 1 year


What is the duration of the programme?

The duration of the MMEd programmes is 4 years, except for Surgery, which takes 5 years.


What is the tuition fees?

Tuition fees is charged on an annual basis. For the year 2024, the fees is Kshs 198,500/-.


Do you offer accommodation for the students?

Yes, the University has separate hostel accommodation facilities for the postgraduate and undergraduate students. Additional housing is available around the neighbourhood. Those interested in University accommodation should contact the University directly for more information on the costs.


What plans do you have in place to ensure continuity of classes during COVID-19?

The University has robust ICT and Digital Learning facilities that support teaching, learning and assessment activities on virtual platforms.


What is the timeline of the interviewing and selection process? 

Once candidates meeting the eligibility requirements for consideration are shortlisted, the interviewing process takes only a week.


How many slots are available for the different departments?

The number of positions by programme varies. Please contact mc.ea@aku.edu for specific details of any programme of your interest.


Do I need to be from East Africa to apply? 

Applications are welcome to all candidates meeting eligibility criteria, regardless of country of origin.


Do your residents go for clinical experience in other hospitals other than at Aga Khan University Hospital?

The University collaborates with many other academic and health institutions where the students have an opportunity to pursue elective rotations.


What are the criteria for getting a scholarship and financial assistance?

All students are eligible for financial support once admitted into the residency programme. Further assistance may be considered on a need-based basis.


Will the panel interviews be held online or in person?

The University utilizes a combination of both in-person and virtual interviews. Details will be available to all shortlisted candidates.


Is the residency position paid?

Yes, all students admitted earn a stipend which helps to meet living expenses for the duration of their training.​


Can the tuition fees be deducted from the monthly salaries?

Yes. Students can request for the fees to be deducted in monthly instalments spread throughout the year.


​Do you provide study material to applicants in preparation for the entry exams?

Currently we do not provide any.


Is it mandatory to have post-internship experience in your field?

No.


Will the test be conducted online this year as well? 

All the entrance tests are conducted online. Shortlisted applicants have an option of sitting the entrance tests online within the campus if they do not have reliable internet connectivity or power supply.


Are candidates allowed to apply to multiple residency programmes?

No, you can only apply to one programme in a recruitment cycle.


If I want to apply to a residency programme in Kenya and another one in Dar-es-salaam, is that allowed?

No.​ This is because the selection process runs concurrently in the two campuses.​

​Applicants should register on the AKU Online Application portal, and upload all the required documents listed below (in PDF or JPEG format).  They should also ensure ​that the completed application form, along with all the attachments, is submitted. A notification will be sent to you  acknowledging successful submission.

Submitting an Application 

Required documents for upload include:

  1. Letter of application supporting intention to enter the programme 

  2. A detailed current curriculum vitae

  3. A statemen​t of purpose demonstrating intent to join the programme, of not more than 1000 words

  4. Certified copies of Medical School transcripts and degree certificates

  5. Medical board/council registration certificate and Annual Retention Certificate (applicable to those in practice for more than one year); or receipt as proof of payment for the certificate

  6. Letter of internship completion or clearance letter from medical superintendent of internship station

  7. Letter(s) of appointment for previous employment, where applicable

  8. The original bank slip or M-Pesa transaction code as proof of payment of a non-refundable application fee

  9. National identity card or passport biodata page

  10. A clear, recent coloured passport photograph

The process starts with advertisement in the local dailies of the East African countries; Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi as well as in the East African and the University website – www.aku.edu - between January and April.

The first stage of shortlisting occurs immediately thereafter, during which applications are verified. Applicants meeting the eligibility criteria are invited to write the entrance test, departmental visits and panel interviews, which take place in May. After selection, Programme Directors present reports of their selection to the PGME Directorate for approval by relevant University committees and the Board of Graduate Studies. Normally, the approval process is completed by the end of May, and successful applicants are notified immediately thereafter.

Registration and induction of new residents will take place at the beginning of September. The orientation programme consists of an overall introduction to the institution, specific PGME orientation, as well as departmental orientation, all of which are intended to give the new cohort a smooth transition into the Programme they have been enrolled in.
