How many intakes are there in a year?
There is only one intake in a year, and it happens between May and July of each year.
What programmes do you offer?
Currently the Medical College in East Africa offers 9 residencies in the Nairobi Campus, and 5 in Dar es Salaam. Click on this link to view the list of programmes.
What is the admission criteria?
The minimum eligibility criteria for medical residency is:
Bachelors degree in Medicine (MBChB/MBBS)
1 year post-basic qualification medical internship completion
Registration by KMPDC of home country’s Medical Board or Council
Annual Retention Certificate for those in practice for more than 1 year
What is the duration of the programme?
The duration of the MMEd programmes is 4 years, except for Surgery, which takes 5 years.
What is the tuition fees?
Tuition fees is charged on an annual basis. For the year 2024, the fees is Kshs 198,500/-.
Do you offer accommodation for the students?
Yes, the University has separate hostel accommodation facilities for the postgraduate and undergraduate students. Additional housing is available around the neighbourhood. Those interested in University accommodation should contact the University directly for more information on the costs.
What plans do you have in place to ensure continuity of classes during COVID-19?
The University has robust ICT and Digital Learning facilities that support teaching, learning and assessment activities on virtual platforms.
What is the timeline of the interviewing and selection process?
Once candidates meeting the eligibility requirements for consideration are shortlisted, the interviewing process takes only a week.
How many slots are available for the different departments?
The number of positions by programme varies. Please contact mc.ea@aku.edu for specific details of any programme of your interest.
Do I need to be from East Africa to apply?
Applications are welcome to all candidates meeting eligibility criteria, regardless of country of origin.
Do your residents go for clinical experience in other hospitals other than at Aga Khan University Hospital?
The University collaborates with many other academic and health institutions where the students have an opportunity to pursue elective rotations.
What are the criteria for getting a scholarship and financial assistance?
All students are eligible for financial support once admitted into the residency programme. Further assistance may be considered on a need-based basis.
Will the panel interviews be held online or in person?
The University utilizes a combination of both in-person and virtual interviews. Details will be available to all shortlisted candidates.
Is the residency position paid?
Yes, all students admitted earn a stipend which helps to meet living expenses for the duration of their training.
Can the tuition fees be deducted from the monthly salaries?
Yes. Students can request for the fees to be deducted in monthly instalments spread throughout the year.
Do you provide study material to applicants in preparation for the entry exams?
Currently we do not provide any.
Is it mandatory to have post-internship experience in your field?
No.
Will the test be conducted online this year as well?
All the entrance tests are conducted online. Shortlisted applicants have an option of sitting the entrance tests online within the campus if they do not have reliable internet connectivity or power supply.
Are candidates allowed to apply to multiple residency programmes?
No, you can only apply to one programme in a recruitment cycle.
If I want to apply to a residency programme in Kenya and another one in Dar-es-salaam, is that allowed?
No. This is because the selection process runs concurrently in the two campuses.
