Chief Facilities and Administrative Services Officer
Syed Mohammad Sohail was appointed as the Chief Facilities and Administrative Services Officer in Pakistan in May 2023 overseeing Purchasing and Supply Chain Management Division, Facilities Management Division, Biomedical, Design, Engineering, Project and Construction Management Office and Site Administration (Transport, Housing, Sports Centre, Travel, Women’s Residence, Laundry and Linen, Mail and Dispatch, Housekeeping and Landscaping). In this position, Sohail provides guardianship of AKU architectural vision and themes, architectural standards and campus master plans with focused reviews of project approval gateways and various business cases. He also provides strategic planning support to university/campus management for all technical activities of facilities that help in smooth functioning of overall operations.
Sohail spent 13 years with AKU prior to joining Aga Khan Health Services in December 2014. His final assignment at AKU was as Senior Administrator Radiology services – at AKU Karachi he contributed to many institutional accomplishments including successful commissioning of Ibn e Zuhr Building for Oncology services, first-ever establishment of Radiation Therapy services, first accreditation with JCIA, commissioning of FMIC, PACS project management, first 3-Tesla MRI and 628-slice CT Scan systems commissioning, recognition in international fora including RSNA, ISQua, IHF and Planetree as well as winning awards for AKU.
During his engagement with Aga Khan Health Services (2014-2023), Sohail got a unique exposure to oversee operations at executive level in East Africa and Central Asia. In 2014, he was appointed as the CEO for the Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu and a cluster of eight outreach health centres where he led the successful turnaround of the hospital and cluster positioning the unit for further growth and expansion.
In 2017, Sohail was appointed Regional CEO of AKHS-Central Asia responsible for Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. His major contributions in Central Asia were successful commissioning of the first ever AKDN Medical facility, the AKMC, Khorog, in the Pamirs, in Tajikistan and the first ever successful bidding of health management of two provinces of Afghanistan (Badakhshan & Bamyan).
In 2020, Sohail returned to Kenya as CEO for the Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa and a cluster of eight outreach health centres where he led successfully the strategic business plan of cluster’s growth including growth in OHCs from 08 to 13, introducing and strengthening various clinical services like Dental, Optometry, ENT, Neurophysiology and most importantly reorganizing and restructuring the management teams focusing on effectiveness and productivity, resulting in unprecedented cost-efficient operations and meeting bottom-line targets.
Prior to coming into the fold of AKDN world, Sohail had excellent exposure by virtue of working with one of the top multinationals then, Pakistan Oxygen Limited (BOC Group), as well as in the domains of advertising and Information technology.
Sohail, who is an Engineer with an MBA, brings a wealth of experience in health services management including exposure to different cultures having worked in almost all the major geographies where AKDN Health system operates. He has been exposed to emerging healthcare initiatives such as patient-centred care and patient safety standards. Sohail brings strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire large diverse teams.
