Derrick Ochieng Otieno
Research Assistant
Derrick Ochieng Otieno is a Research Assistant with the Brain & Mind Institute (BMI), contributing to the NeuroGAP-Psychosis II project, which focuses on the neuropsychiatric genetics of African populations. His primary responsibilities include participant recruitment and enrollment, data management, and monitoring and evaluation.
Derrick holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Research Methods from Pwani University and a degree in Public Health from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He has also earned certificates from the University of Washington in Leadership and Management in Health, Introduction to Epidemiology for Global Health, and Policy Development and Advocacy for Global Health.
Before joining BMI, Derrick was a Postgraduate Diploma Fellow at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme. He also worked with the SPARK project at Aga Khan University’s Institute for Human Development, supporting efforts to enhance resilience and mental health in children with developmental disorders and their caregivers. At the African Population and Health Research Center, he contributed to the ARISE project, which addresses urban inequities in informal settlements.
Derrick enjoys history, particularly through documentaries and books.
