​English for the Workplace​

Aim

By the end of this course, learners will have gained the language skills and proficiency needed to communicate more effectively in English within a professional setting

Target audience

The target audience are young job-seekers or early career workers who would benefit from developing their English language communication skills for the workplace and overall language proficiency. 

Prerequisites

Participants will need a minimum A2 level of English (CEFR) in order to benefit from this course.

Learning hours

It is estimated that participants will spend 3-4 hours online each week studying asynchronously. The course has a total of approximately 30 learning hours.

Development of Competencies or Learning Outcomes

  • Language proficiency: Improved knowledge of workplace related grammar, including accurate and appropriate use of present, past, and future tenses, verb patterns, linking words, phrasal verbs, stative verbs, and conditional sentences.

  • Communication skills: Communicate confidently and fluently in various workplace scenarios, such as introducing oneself, giving work updates, discussing future plans, delivering presentations, participating in video calls, making requests, and answering interview questions.

  • Writing Skills: Use appropriate language and style to compose emails, reports, and cover letters, utilizing appropriate noun phrases, passive voice, and linkers.

Content and schedule

This ten-week course will focus on areas of workplace communication such as introductions, making and responding to requests by email, giving presentations, and exchanging information. In addition to practicing skills required in the workplace, each week participants will also study workplace grammar and vocabulary to help participants build a solid foundation in the English language. 

Each week, students will have access to a range of online materials, including video lessons, interactive activities, and discussion forums. This asynchronous format will allow learners to study at their own pace and on their own schedule, making it easier for them to balance their other commitments. 

Students will receive weekly feedback and support from online tutors, who will help guide their progress and provide personalized support.  

Teaching & Learning Modality

Online asynchronous - Participants will study in their own time, completing interactive online activities, accessing digital resources and submitting tasks to demonstrate their understanding of the language and skills covered in each unit. An ELE_net online facilitator will support them throughout the course through announcements, discussion forums, video guides and feedback on submitted tasks. 

Assessment

Participants will be required to complete 80% of the course activities and achieve a pass grade in 80% of the course units in order to receive a Course Completion Certificate. 

Students' performance will be measured by their completion in the weekly activities and by the standard of submitted weekly course tasks.
