Exceptions to the Student Health Services Plan

The following will not be covered by the Student Health Services Plan:

Pre-entrance physical examination​

Problems/diseases detected at the time of pre-entrance physical examination on the basis of history, examination or investigations are “pre-existing” conditions and are not covered by the Student Health Plan. Students will be required to cover the cost of further evaluation and management.

Immunisations

While students will be guided and given detailed counselling about the vaccinations based on their prior immunisation histories and antibody titers, the cost of the vaccines will not be covered by Student Health Services. 

Sub-specialty care which needs referral to health care facilities outside of the Aga Khan University Hospital will not be covered

Chronic dialysis

If dialysis is needed during stay at AKU, secondary to any acute illness, that will be covered by Student Health Services Plan. 

Dental care

Dental care is not covered by student health, including referrals to the dentist and maxillofacial surgeons, investigations, dental extractions (with or without general anaesthesia), and other procedures and surgeries.Treatment will be provided at the Student Health clinic only for acute dental conditions e.g. infection or pain. ​

Chronic rehabilitation and prosthesis care

Trivial dermatology care

Dermatology referral will not be covered for cosmetic conditions such as eye bags, dandruff, hair loss, acne, hirsutism etc (treatment for these conditions will be provided by a student health physician at CHC). ​Referral to plastic surgeon for cosmetic surgeries is not covered. 

Oncology

Oncological care (including chemotherapy and radiotherapy) will not be covered​.

Pregnancy related care

Visits to obstetrician, investigations, delivery/LSCS charges will not be covered. ​

Pre-existing conditions

Pre-existing conditions as identified during the physical examination or the course of study at AKU will not be covered by the Student Health Plan. Students will be required to cover the cost of further evaluation and management.

Routine screening tests 

This include common tests such as the lipid profile, pap smear, mammogram. Please consult the Student Health Nurse if you are unsure if your test will be covered by the Student Health Plan.  

Specialised opthamological care

Ophthalmologist referral for Routine Eye examination, Lasik and 360°​ laser surgery will not be covered (unless it is urgent and ​indicated within 24 hours)​

Investigations, immunisations and treatment for students going on electives or on vacation

Visits to hospitals or clinics, investigations or medications procured during vacations or electives will not be covered by the Student Health Plan.  ​
