The form has two sections:

1.     Verification Form from School/Institution

2.     Application for Electives - 2024​

The verification form must be completed by the (student's) Dean or the Dean's designated officer. This completed form must be uploaded on the online portal to complete the Application form for Elective. Students enrolled at an accredited WHO and PMDC recognized Institutions are eligible to apply.

The AKU offers elective placements to start at the beginning of the calendar month. A student is allowed to complete an electives placement once at AKU for a period of four weeks for national students /six to eight weeks for foreign students during his/her formal academic career in a medical/allied health sciences programme.​

3.     Opportunities for electives are limited in each discipline.

​Students with no resit, repeat having achieved the following may apply (as applicable):

  •  with an equivalent average of 3.0 cGPA or at least 70% in the semester examination.
  •  an overall aggregate of 70% in Professional examinations.

For Placements in Clinical Rotations, Basic Sciences and Community Health Sciences (Research):

  • Students in their first, second, third or fourth year of medical schools may apply.

Eligibility Criteria for Rotations:​

1)         Biological & Biomedical Sciences (BBS): 

i) Anatomy        ii) Physiology               iii) Pharmacology          iv) Biochemistry

2)         Community Health Sciences (CHS)​

A.    Upon successful completion of second professional examination (3rd Year), six semesters or in MBBS Year IV or V applications may be submitted for:​

1)   Pathology & Laboratory Medicine:

      i) Hematology   ii) Histopathology   iii) Microbiology   iV) Chemical Pathology   v) Molecular Pathology      

2)   Pulmonology                                                    3)   Radiology

4)   Paediatrics                                                        5)   Family Medicine

B.    Upon Successful completion of third professional examination (4th Year), eight semesters or in MBBS final year applications may be submitted for:​

1)   Medicine:

i) General Medicine      ii) Cardiology           iii) Gastroenterology                                    iv) Infectious Diseases

v) Neurology

2)   Surgery:

i) General Surgery         ii) Orthopaedics        iii) Otolaryngology (ENT)                                   iv) Neurosurgery

v) Ophthalmology         vi) Urology                 vii) Cardiothoracic Surgery                      viii) Paediatric Surgery

3)   Anaesthesia                                                             4)   Psychiatry

5)   Obstetrics & Gynaecology: (female only)              6)   Physiotherapy

4.     A completed application form must be submitted at least three months prior to the month in which an elective rotation is requested.  (See calendar).

5.     SUBMISSION OF AN APPLICATION DOES NOT GUARANTEE CONFIRMATION OF PROPOSED ELECTIVES.

6.     STUDENTS WHO HAVE ALREADY WRITTEN THEIR FINAL YEAR PROF. EXAM ARE NOT ELIGIBILE TO APPLY FOR ELECTIVE.

Note: The photograph & CNIC/Passport should be in JPEG format up to 2 MB size and all other documents should be in PDF format size up to 4 MB file each.​

  •  Passport size photograph 
  • CNIC / NICOP (front & back copy) or relevant Passport pages (for foreign nationals) 
  • Marksheets/Transcripts of all Professional/Semester examinations written to-date (attested by your Institution)
  • Application Processing Fee: (Payment Slip must have following details Account Tittle, Account Number and Transction Date)

- Applying from Pakistan is Rs. 5000/-

- Applying from Overseas/Abroad is US $ 150/-

The application fee is non-refundable. Students must ensure eligibility before applying.

The non – refundable application processing fee can be transferred online.​

Important Note:

7.     Students applying from outstation should note that hostel accommodation may not always be available. The University managed hostels have non-air-conditioned, single, and shared, furnished room accommodation with communal washroom and laundry facilities. The students pay for their living expenses in Pakistani currency. The room rent for the year 2024 is Rs 1100/- per day OR Rs. 33,000/- per month for national and US$ 350/- per month for overseas students. Food, which may be purchased from the cafeteria, may cost up to Rs. 800/- per day.

8.     At registration, the student will be provided an Identity card for the duration of the elective placement. In case of misplacement, Rs. 200 will be charged for its reissuance.

9.     Health care facilities are available in the Aga Khan University Hospital on self-payment.

10.  Students must follow all the rules and regulations of Aga Khan University. The University is not responsible or liable for any mishap or harm that may be caused directly or indirectly, on or off the University premises while the student is on the elective placement Student Anti-Harassment Policy and Student Code of Conduct

PLEASE NOTE:

  • ​Students studying in A-Levels or High School, who wish to acquire such experience at AKU may only apply for Biological & Biomedical Sciences and Community Health Sciences. No minimum requirements.​

Requirements upon selection:​

  • Upon being selected, the Elective Office will confirm your elective placement via email three weeks before the placement. Upon receiving our offer of acceptance, you must complete and submit the additional requirements outlined below. You must submit additional forms via reliable courier service.
  • If we are not able to offer you placement, you will be notified via email. Please do not call us or visit us in person.
  • To confirm your elective placement at AKU, a Non-refundable registration fee of Rs. 4,000/- (applicable for national students) is required via online transfer.

  • Submit duly filled and signed ID Card Form
  • Duly filled and signed Hostel Accommodation Form (if applicable)
  • You must submit your COVID 19 vaccination certificate upon selection. Additional requirements will be communicated upon arrival.
  • At the conclusion of the 4-week electives, an evaluation will be provided upon receipt of clearance from all sections.​
