The Global Burden of Disease Estimation Workshop, organized by the CITRIC Health Data Science Centre at Aga Khan University, in collaboration with the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), at the University of Washington, took place from January 8-10, 2024, at Aga Khan University in Karachi. An eight-member delegation from the IHME, visited the Aga Khan University to conduct the workshop.
The three-day event featured comprehensive sessions covering primary metrics such as DALY, YLL, YLD, and HALE, offering participants a deep understanding of the global health landscape. The workshop included practical demonstrations of the GBD compare tool for benchmarking and priority setting, as well as visualization tools for exploring demographic outcomes and mortality patterns. Participants engaged in hands-on exercises which helped them apply this knowledge to answer questions related to causes of death, non-fatal health outcomes, and risk factors.
With a focus on benchmarking exercises, the workshop aimed to enhance participants' proficiency in interpreting and utilizing GBD data. The event concluded with a Risk Factor Viz Tool Exercise on the third day, followed by a closing session that included a Q&A and a comprehensive wrap-up, ensuring participants left with valuable insights and skills in global health estimation.
