​Cardiac Imaging

The Cardiac Ima​​​ging Fellowship has been initiated to start from January 2023 after a formal approval by the Postgraduate Medical Education committee of the University in May 2022. The program is designed to develop fully trained independent cardiac imaging specialists specialists, who would serve as leaders in the field.​

​The main objective of this two years multimodality cardiac imaging fellowship is to produce skilled and academic cardiologists, in the field of cardiac imaging and related research, who at the end of the training would be:

  • Having a sound knowledge and understanding of both basic and advanced principles of cardiac imaging (Echo, nuclear cardiology, CCT and CMR).
  • Performing research in this highly specialized field of cardiology and would complete two research projects and submit in the manuscripts to index journals.
  • Competent in performing and interpreting transthoracic echocardiograms in addition to knowing their indications and limitations.
  • Competent in performing and interpreting stress echocardiograms in addition to knowing their indications and limitations.
  • Competent in performing and interpreting Trans-esophageal echocardiograms in addition to knowing their indications and limitations.
  • Competent in performing and interpreting myocardial perfusion scans.
  • Competent in interpreting cardiac CT angiography.
  • Competent in performing and interpreting cardiac magnetic resource (CMR).
  • Teaching cardiology residents rotating through Echo, Nuclear, Cardiac CT and CMR lab.


Following completion of training the trainee would be eligible for appearing in American Board exams for Echo, Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiac CT and CMR. The train​ee would also be eligible for FCPS cardiac imaging exam when it will be started by the college of physicians and surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP). The trainee would be able to practice as an independent specialist in cardiac imaging.


Training period is two years. There will be comprehensive training in all the modalities of cardiac imaging and research related to cardiac imaging.

It will include one year in Echocardiography, six months in nuclear cardiology and six months in cardiac CT and CMR.


The section of cardiology comprises of ten full time and three non–full time faculty members. Out of the full-time faculty, five are interventional cardiologists, one structural heart disease specialist, three imaging cardiologists and two electrophysiologists.

The program will be supervised by a Program Director with the help of other faculty members.

Working hours are from 0800 hours to 1700 hours on weekdays.  Though there are no in-house calls, the fellow will be on-call for any emergency cardiac imaging procedure.

A continuous performance-based evaluation of the trainee is performed by the cardiac Imaging faculty on a quarterly basis. Additionally, the trainee is evaluated in terms of procedural skills, data interpretation and synthesis of diagnosis, using standard assessment tools.

Research will be an ongoing process during both years. Fellow will complete dedicated 180 days in research, by doing two days per week for 18 months and one day per week for 6 months. During these days, she/he will be released from all other activities and will spend full time in doing research work. 

She/he will be responsible to;
  • Complete two research projects and submit the manuscripts to index journals.
  • Present original research in national or international meetings

  • ​MBBS from an institution recognized by the PMC/PM&DC
  • One year of house job/internship, with six months each in medicine and allied disciplines and surgery and allied disciplines
  • Two years residency in Internal Medicine
  • Minimum of three years of residency/ fellowship training in Cardiology
  • FCPS Part II in Adult Cardiology or equivalent
