​Salary Structure

Residents are offered a monthly salary according to their level of training:
  • Resident I      Rs. 121,000/-
  • Resident II     Rs. 129,000/-
  • Resident III    Rs. 138,000/-
  • Resident IV    Rs. 146,000/-
  • Resident V     Rs. 155,000/-

Earned Leave: 23 working days per annum

Outpatient Medical Expenses

Annual maximum reimbursement limit is Rs 95,000; which can be used within AKUH campuses.

Inpatient Medical Expenses

Aga Khan University will bear 85 percent of the admissible hospitalization expenses. The remaining 15 percent of the expenses will be borne by the employee and should be settled by the employee before the patient is discharged. However, if an employee ​is unable to pay the required expenses immediately, he/she can request for this amount to be deducted from his/her salary in a maximum of 12 equal installments.

The above hospitalization benefit is applicable at AKUH Stadium Road campus or secondary health care hospitals and the room entitlement for the employee and his/her dependents’ will be of general ward.

Assistance for Diagnostic Tests and Procedures Expense

All diagnostic tests and procedures which cost over Rs 7,500 will be treated as inpatient, i.e. 85 percent of the cost will be borne by AKUH and 15 percent will be charged to the employee. All eligible employees and their dependents can avail this benefit. Limits apply: expenses pertaining to dental procedures, cosmetic treatment and executive medical check-ups will not be admissible under this category.

Group Insurance

Residents are covered under the Group Life Insurance Scheme for Rs.1,000,000/- or 30 months’ last drawn salary, whichever is higher. Additionally, coverage for temporary and permanent disability or death due to accidents is also provided.  The cost of premium is fully borne by the organization.​

Sports and Rehabilitation Centre

AKU has a state-of-the-art Sports and Rehabilitation Centre (SRC) facility on campus for which Residents are eligible for membership to avail the facilities. It is designed to meet a comprehensive range of sporting, recreational and rehabilitation needs. The facilities include a health and fitness centre equipped with the latest equipment and an extensive range of machine and free weights. Qualified staff are available to design personalized training programmes.  The Sports Centre also includes a gymnasium which is used for indoor basketball, badminton, volleyball, net ball and aerobics (offering a diverse range of classes). The Sports Centre also has squash courts, a swimming pool, and grounds for football and cricket.

The Sports Centre membership is open to all Employees, Trainees, Alumni, Trustees (and their spouse and children), Students, and Volunteers of the Aga Khan University. Residents (and their spouse and children) are also eligible for membership of the Sports Centre.

Subsidized Meal Facility

Meal facilities subsidized by the University are available for AKU employees and trainees which includes Residents This Subsidized Meal Facility is available at cafeterias of the University.

Residents are also eligible to have payment for their meals to be charged to their stipend and the same is deducted directly through the monthly payroll, rather than having to pay cash for it. Residents may apply to avail this facility by completing the form available on OneAKU.

The Centre for Early Child Development (CECD)

CECD is a unique, state-of-the-art facility to provide childcare services for employees and trainees working at AKU including Residents. Recognizing that early experiences of the young children and the environment lay the foundation for their future health, success and well-being, the CECD offers a programme and services to meet the physical, social, emotional and cognitive developmental needs of children between the ages of three months to three years.

Basics Store

A fair price shop 'Basics' is available at the Stadium Road Campus for the AKU faculty, staff, students, volunteers and trainees including Residents. The store sells essential household items at lower discounted prices. Residents may also avail the facility to have amounts payable for their purchases charged to their stipend for a direct deduction and avail the cashless charging facility. A Resident desiring to avail this facility should complete the form available on OneAKU (AKU intra-net) for the same.

Learning & Development

AKU encourages faculty/staff and trainees including Residents to participate in learning and development opportunities whether in-house and/or with external parties, based on institutional objectives and professional development needs, following due process of approval subject to budgetary provisions.  The aim is to achieve individual and institutional goals through the development of appropriate and adequate knowledge, skills and abilities. In turn, faculty/staff and trainees are expected to share their learning to contribute and build the University's capacity.

Social Events and Wellness

The University recognizes the need for its employees and trainees to maintain a good work-life balance; for this reason numerous social activities and events are planned throughout the year for the employees/trainees and their families to participate in, such as, summer camps for children, sports coaching sessions, inter department sports tournaments, Mango festival, Spring festival, Voice of AKU, Power Yoga, Geet Mehfil, Winter Festival, Tambola nights, etc. Residents are encouraged to participate in these social activities along with their spouse and children.

Wellness: The Postgraduate Medical Education Committee (PGMEC) in collaboration with the Counselling Services and Wellness Office of AKU offers programmes to support postgraduate trainees registered with the Aga Khan University, (AKU). The programme encompasses physical and mental health, emotional well-being, and appropriate counseling services.
